Dental implants are small titanium posts that are actually inserted into the jaw bone in place of the roots of missing teeth. Since titanium is a biocompatible material, after several months the implant actually fuses with your jaw bone. This process, called osseointegration, gives dental implants their long term stability. A custom-made dental crown is then fixed on top of the implant. The new tooth looks and functions exactly like the rest of your natural teeth.
Dental implants are quite a popular restorative treatment option because they are more comfortable, look more natural, and are easier to chew with than removable alternatives such as dentures. Where teeth adjacent to the missing one are healthy and unrestored, placing an implant removes the need to “trim down” or prepare the adjacent teeth as would be required to place a dental bridge.
Aditionally, mini dental implants can be placed in the jawbone in order to provide a secure foundation for dentures to attach to. This can give patients confidence that their dentures will not become loose or dislodged but are securely held in place. No more need for messy adhesives! |
